AI Foundations Unveiled: Part – Two: the model and knowledge components
How Model & Knowledge Components Power Smart Systems
Part 2 of the series on understanding AI components (read Part 1 here)
TL;DR: The model and knowledge component forms the cognitive core of any AI system. It combines pre-trained models, a vast knowledge base, and continuous learning mechanisms, allowing systems to generate accurate, context-aware, and sophisticated responses. Different model types — like GPT-4, multimodal models, and others — are key to making AI capable of understanding and interacting in complex ways.
In our journey to unravel the layers that form an AI system, we explored the infrastructure component in Part 1 — the foundation upon which everything else is built. Now, we turn our focus to the model and knowledge component, the cognitive heart of an AI system. This layer is what drives learning, reasoning, and contextual understanding, enabling the system to deliver intelligent and useful responses.
To understand the role of the model and knowledge component, let’s again use ChatGPT-4o with Canvas as our example. In this system, the model and knowledge component does the heavy lifting in terms of cognition, drawing from both the foundational model and an expansive base of knowledge to make…
